In the past, standard testing procedures for cleanable filter media paid very little attention to emissions and long term filter behaviour. The emissions were characterized as total emission value and no aging procedure was included in the testing protocol. In the last few years a method of accelerated aging has been introduced to several filter testing guidelines, however no investigation has yet been undertaken if this method is suitable to predict the long term behaviour for filter media. Concerning the emission, only ATSM D 6830-02 included some improved measurement methods, however these are still optional.
Facing increasingly more stringent air quality standards (PM10, PM2.5), into which a size selective characterisation of immissions has been introduced, it is of urgent interest to rate the emissions of surface filters in a similar way and to find methods to reduce the PM-relevant emissions. Therefore the influence of different filter operating conditions (dust loading, maximum pressure drop and regeneration pressure) on the emissions of cleanable filter media has been studied. However, the results when testing new filter media are only of secondary importance, as the operating and emission behaviour of filter media may change during its lifetime. Hence the influence of different methods of accelerated aging on the results of the subsequent filter tests has been investigated, in order to determine which method should be used to obtain a good approximation of the long time behaviour of a filter media.
